During the Edo period, it served as the clan shrine of the Owari Tokugawa family and the head guardian shrine of Nagoya. It was elevated to the status of a prefectural shrine (KenchA) in the Meiji era and is currently listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
