Founded in 1595 CE (Bunroku 4) by Nichiso, the 12th abbot of Ikegami Honmonji, in Bakurocho. After suffering from frequent fires, the temple was relocated to its current site in 1793 CE (Kansei 5). It is traditionally said that Tokugawa Ieyasu was the founding patron and Nichiso was the founding monk.
