It is said to have been founded in 708 CE (Wado 1) by the monk Kibi no Makibi. In 1590, Sakakibara Yasumasa, who became the lord of Kanayama Castle, established various halls as his family temple. In 1615, it was designated as one of the Eighteen Danrin (Buddhist monasteries) of the Kanto region by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1990, it was relocated to its current site due to the Kanayama Station Front Plaza Development Project.
