A temple of the Tozan branch of the Shingon sect located in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. It is also known as Momoyama and Tomyoin. It is the 30th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
History
It is said to have been founded in 810 CE (Doto 5) by Kukai as the head temple of Tosa-ku Ichinomiya (the Grand Shrine of Tosa Province), together with the associated Shinto shrine. It was destroyed by fire during the Onin period but flourished under the patronage of the second daimyo of the Tosa Domain. It was closed during the early Meiji period due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, but was revived in 1930 as the 30th station of the pilgrimage after the Tomyoin branch was relocated from Saitama Prefecture.
