1467年に日護が安城に創建したのが始まり。1532年に松平清康が岡崎城に入った際に本寺も岡崎へ移転し、その後も松平氏や徳川家康らから寄進を受けた。1648年には徳川家光から朱印地を与えられ、現在の地に移転した。
