History
Founded in 830 CE (Tencho 7) by Ennin, who established it as Myoraju-ji to spread the teachings of the Tendai sect to the eastern provinces. It was revived during the Kamakura period by the monk Sohai and became the head temple of the Tendai sect in the Kanto region. In 1599 CE (Keicho 4), the monk Tenkai entered the temple and changed its name to Kita-in.
