According to shrine tradition, the shrine's origins lie in Empress Jingū setting up a sacred enclosure on Mount Seimei in Tsushima to enshrine the deities of heaven and earth. In 677 CE (Tenmu 6), a shrine was built at the foot of Mount Seimei by imperial decree to enshrine the Hachiman deity. In 1871 (Meiji 4), it was designated as a Hitotomi Shrine, but in 1890 (Meiji 23), it was restored to its original name, Hachiman-gū. In 1916 (Taishō 5), it was elevated to the status of a Prefectural Shrine.
