According to tradition, in 807 CE (Daido 2), Kobo Daishi (Kukai) visited this area and, sensing that the shape of the mountain resembled a precious jewel, recognized it as a sacred site. He carved an image of Enmei Jizo Bosatsu (the Jizo Bodhisattva of Longevity) and established a hall. The temple was closed in 1871 (Meiji 4) but was re-established in 1883 (Meiji 16).
