According to tradition, in the first year of the Tencho era (824 CE) during the early Heian period, Kukai was guided by Manjushri Bodhisattva to stay at this site, where the temple was renamed Monjuin. A local wealthy farmer, Monji Saburo, confessed his sins to Kukai, and the journey Kukai made around Shikoku is considered the origin of the Shikoku Henro (pilgrimage). The temple is also referred to as the memorial site for Monji Saburo. It was later relocated to its current location, which was the site of Monji Saburo's former residence.
