Traditionally said to have been founded by Kukai, it was originally named Hakkokoji. When Kukai revisited, he saw roasted chestnuts growing and renamed it Yakuriji. The temple was completely destroyed by fire during the Tensho period but was rebuilt during the Bunroku era.
