Founded in 1609 CE (Keichō 14) by Ikeda Toshitaka, it was later renamed Ryūhō-ji by Ikeda Tadao. In 1632 CE (Kan'ei 9), Ikeda Mitsumasa renamed it Kokusei-ji, and it became the family temple of the Ikeda clan. The main buildings were destroyed in the Okayama air raid, but the main hall was rebuilt in 1965.
