It is said that Hayabutamaru-no-Mikoto was appointed as the Kokuzo (provincial governor) of Higo Province during the reign of Emperor Suinin. In the 18th year of Emperor Keiko's reign (88 CE), he rebuilt the shrine and established its rituals. Together with Ashu Shrine, he is credited with developing the Ashu region and guiding agricultural practices and afforestation. The current shrine buildings were constructed in 1672 CE (Kanbun 12) by Hosokawa Tsunatoshi.
