Founded in 853 CE (Ninju 3) by Ennin (Daisai Jigaku) by imperial decree of Emperor Mutsumi. In 870 CE (Jogan 12), Emperor Saga visited the temple and designated the statue as a secret Buddha. The temple complex was destroyed during the Onin War, but was rebuilt in the early Edo period with the assistance of Hoyo Kakuyu.
