The temple invited Keikawa Soryu, the 10th abbot of Myoshinji, as its founding priest, and received the imperial name 'Enton' from Emperor Go-Mizunoo. In 1680 CE (Enpo 8), it was designated as a temple under imperial patronage by Emperor Go-Sakuramachi, and has since served as a place of prayer for the Imperial House.
