Jizoin (Tsubakiji)
京都市北区大将軍川端町2
Known for the 'Sanzatsu Tsubaki' (scattering camellias) within its grounds, this temple is the origin of the name Tsubakiji. It is also the 30th station of the Ryojo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
History
The temple was founded in 726 CE when Giki, by imperial decree from Emperor Shomu, established it near Kuniyagi Pond in Settsu Province and enshrined Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva). During the Heian period, it was moved to the south of Inokasa Mountain. In the Muromachi period, the buildings were destroyed in the Meitoku Rebellion but were rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. In 1589 CE (Tensho 17), it was relocated to its current site by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and subsequently became a Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple.

What visitors say
In front of the main hall, 'Goshoku Yae Sanzatsu Tsubaki' (five-colored double-petaled scattering camellias) bloom in various shades of white and red. The sight of fallen petals covering the ground is a highlight. The grounds also feature weeping cherry blossoms and the grave of Amano-ya Riebe. Goshuin (shrine/temple calligraphic seal stamps), camellia-themed omamori (protective amulets), and postcards featuring Buddhist figures are available for purchase.
