平安時代初期の弘仁年間に空海が女人の安産を願い地蔵菩薩を安置したのが始まりとされている。江戸時代には徳島藩の庇護を受け、蜂須賀家の安産祈願所となった。明治5年に聖幢寺が廃寺となり、後に地蔵院と改められた。
