Suikyo Shrine

The shrine's origins date back to 1859 CE (Ansei 6), when the 10th feudal lord of the Akizuki Domain, Kuroda Nagamoto, commemorated the 200th death anniversary of the 1st feudal lord, Nagamochi. He was granted the divine title 'Suikyo Myojin' by the Yoshida family and enshrined the deity in the side hall of the Hachiman Shrine. From 1872 CE (Meiji 5) to 1874 CE (Meiji 7), the current shrine buildings were constructed at the present site. In 1880 CE (Meiji 13), the Black Gate of Akizuki Castle was relocated to the shrine grounds. In 1947 CE (Shōwa 22), the successive feudal lords and those who died in battle from the Shimabara Rebellion through the Pacific War were jointly enshrined.
