Ninomiya Sontoku successfully rebuilt the finances of many feudal domains and restored rural areas through his Houtoku Shihou (method of repaying virtue). In his later years, as a retainer of the shogunate, he devoted himself to the restoration of the Nikko Shinyo (Nikko Divine Domain) and passed away in this area. The shrine grounds feature a prefectural historical site marking his grave, which holds his entire remains, as well as a Treasure Hall housing his personal belongings.
