Sakano Shirataki Shrine
桐生市境野町2丁目1453−12
This shrine enshrines the deities Yachikusaki-hime-no-mikoto and Shirataki-hime-no-mikoto, who are kami of weaving. It is recognized as one of the constituent cultural assets of the Japanese Heritage site 'Kakaatenka - The Silk Story of Gunma'.
History
The shrine originated from a shrine established between 1113 CE (Chōgen 1) and 1118 CE (Chōgen 6) by Shirataki-hime, who married into the Nitta Mountains from Kyoto and enshrined the weaving deity Ama-no-Yachikusaki-hime-no-mikoto. Shirataki-hime was later enshrined alongside Yachikusaki-hime as the ancestral kami of Kiryu silk weaving. In 1907 CE (Meiji 40), the shrine merged with three nearby shrines—Kashikura Shrine, Akagi Shrine, and Suwa Shrine—along with their respective subsidiary shrines.
