A Buddhist temple established in 991 CE. Its highlights include a stone garden designed according to traditional styles and the annual performance of Kyogen (classical comic theater).
What visitors say
Known as a temple associated with the Shinsengumi, the grounds feature the site of the squad's training ground and busts of Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo. In addition to the main hall and a pagoda, there is a paid garden underground that displays Buddhist statues, a chronological chart, and swords. During the Setsubun Festival in February, Ninjo Kyogen (a local variant of Kyogen) and a dance to drive away demons are performed, and the temple is also a bustling destination for Shihou-mairi (a pilgrimage to four specific temples).
