式内社（名神大社）後継社であり、安芸国総社後継社でもある。中世に社勢が衰退し所在不明となったが、江戸時代に後裔社を巡る論争の末、明治6年に現在地に創建された。社伝では、神武天皇が東征の際に滞在した多祁理宮あるいは埃宮の跡に創祀されたとされる。
