Tradition holds that it was founded during the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (the 21st emperor). In ancient times, Mount Tado was revered as a sacred mountain (shintai-yama). During the medieval period, it received protection from the Kitabatake clan and was also worshipped as a war deity. The shrine was destroyed by fire in 1571 during the suppression of the Nagashima Ikkoku uprising and was rebuilt in 1605 by Tada Tadakatsu.
