History
The shrine was founded in the first year of Daiho (701 CE) when Fujiwara no Tokitada enshrined a kami from Usa Hachiman-gu as a protective deity for the pacification of the eastern provinces. The current main hall (honden) was rebuilt in the fifth year of Tensho (1577 CE) by Tago Tsunetsune, the lord of Shimotsuke Castle, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Successive castle lords held the shrine in high esteem, and it is said that Taira no Masakado visited to pray for victory in battle.
