The shrine's origin is said to date back to the first year of the Daihō era (701 CE), when Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his wife Inada-hime-no-Mikoto enshrined themselves within the precincts of the local Tsuira Shrine during an epidemic. In May of that same year, it was named Daihō Tenno-gū (Daihō Heavenly King Grand Shrine). During the Muromachi period, it received donations from Ashikaga Yoshimasa and a distant worship site was built by Ashikaga Yoshihisa. In the Meiji era, following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it was renamed Daihō Shrine.
