The temple's origins are said to date to around the 4th year of Emperor Junwu's reign (704 CE), when En no Gyōja discovered a spring and enshrined the Eight Great Dragon Kings beside it. It has a history of being revitalized after a great serpent was defeated by Seihō, a saint of this temple's lineage. During the Meiji era, it became one of the protective sub-temples of Mount Omine-ji. The temple was destroyed in the 1946 Dōgawa Fire but was rebuilt in 1960, at which time the ban on women entering the grounds was also lifted.
