According to tradition, in 815 CE (Kōnin 6), Kūkai perceived the Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana Buddha) during his ascetic practices, bowed three times with a single strike, carved a statue of the Dainichi Nyorai, and founded the temple. It was restored during the Ōei era (1394 CE onward), and in 1649 CE (Keian 2), the main hall was constructed by Hachisuka Tadayasu, the second lord of the Tokushima Domain. From 1887 CE (Meiji 20) onward, it became a branch temple of Tōdai-ji and is currently a quasi-special head temple of the Tōdai-ji Shingon sect.
