伝弘仁6年に空海がこの地で護摩修行の際、大日如来から一寺を建立せよと告げられたことで創建された。元は國中寺の場所にあり、一宮神社の別当寺であったが、神仏分離により現在の場所に移り、現在は真言宗大覚寺派の寺院となっている。
