Founded in 1457. It began when Shibukawa Yoshikage discovered a spring in the shallows of the Ishigami River during his campaign against Ashikaga Ujikiyo of the Koga Kubo shogunate, where he prayed for continued military success. Originally enshrined at "Ohama Well," it was destroyed by fire in a battle in 1477 and relocated and rebuilt at its current site during the Enkyo era (1744–1748) of the Edo period.
