It is said to have been founded in 1570 CE (Genki 1) by Itabe Okanetsu Seisai, with the first abbot (kaizan) being Ei Gan Rin Tetsu, the fifth generation of the Sogenin temple in Mita Village, Aihama District. It served as the family temple of the Gokan family, hatamoto of the Edo Shogunate who governed the Naganoda area. Originally located in the small district of Sumisen in Naganoda Village, it was moved to its current location by Gokan Nairyouin Kan Nyu Seimei, the third lord of the Gokan clan.
