History
The founding date is unknown, but it is said to have been a household shrine within the residence of Sasaki Gonsaemon, the village head of Arai-juku village during the Edo period. In 1677 CE (Enpō 5), the Nennoji Temple became the Bessōji (a Buddhist temple in charge of managing a shrine) and took over its administration. In 1868 CE (Meiji 1), it became independent under the Order of Separation of Shinto and Buddhism and was renamed Hie Shrine.
