History
Founded by Matsudaira Chitada as the ancestral temple of the Anjo Matsudaira clan, it was named Daikyuji (Great Tree) in a prayer for the birth of a shogun from the Matsudaira family. It was later revived by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, and records remain of visits and donations by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the 7th year of the Keicho era (1602 CE), it became a temple under imperial patronage (chokuganji).
