The founding date is unknown. In ancient times, it enshrined Miwa-no-Kami (Oonamamuchi-no-Kami) from Yamato and Tamayori-hime. It is said that during the time of Tadamitsu, the first head of the Shimazu clan, spirit tablets of Emperor Chouai, Emperor Nintoku, and Emperor Nintoku were enshrined alongside Empress Jingu, transferred from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. In the medieval period, it was the political center of Isasaku-sho and received reverence from the provincial lords. In 1909 (Meiji 42), several shrines were merged into this one.
