文徳天皇の斉衡3年(856年)12月29日、大己貴命・少彦名命の二神が神磯に降臨したのが創建の起源と伝わる。延喜式神名帳では大社に列した。社殿は戦国期の兵乱で焼失したが、水戸藩2代藩主・徳川光圀の命により元禄3年(1690年)に造営が始まり、享保15年(1730年)に現在の本殿・拝殿・随神門が完成した。
