The shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Suinin when Oomikami from Omiwa in Yamato Province was enshrined to pray for victory in battle and peace among the people during the pacification of the Eastern Provinces. Although it was destroyed by fire during the Sengoku period, it was restored to its current form in 1682 through donations from Tokugawa Iemitsu.
