History
It is said to have been founded in 1215 CE (Kenpō 3) by Jōkō, who received a statue of Fudō Myō-ō (the Wisdom King of Immovable Wisdom) bestowed from Daigo-ji. Until the Kan'ei period, it served as the bettō-ji (temple in charge) of Usui Hachimangū (Usui Hachiman Grand Shrine) and is still located adjacent to its east. On the recommendation of Katsura Shōin, the mother of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the monk Ryōken became the abbot. He later founded Ono Gokokuji in Tokyo, which traces its origins to this temple.
