According to tradition, Kukai crossed to Miyajima Island in 806 CE (Doto 1) and established the temple after performing ascetic practices on Mount Misen. In ancient times, it was known as 'Suisei-ji' and served as the Besshoji for Itsukushima Shrine, overseeing shrine rituals and managing the Shaso (shrine monks). Most of the temple buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1887 (Meiji 20), but subsequent restoration work was carried out.
