Founded in 1619 by the monk Bon'yo in Asakusa Morimachi (present-day Kuramae). It was later relocated in 1631 to Honjo (present-day Oshiage, Sumida Ward). After suffering damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake, it was moved to its current location and rebuilt in 1931.
