A temple of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism located in Naka Ward, Nagoya City, officially named Kitano-yama Shinpukuji Hosoin. The principal image is the Holy Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) Bodhisattva, and it is affectionately known locally as 'Osue Kannon' or 'the Kannon of Osue.' It was founded in 1324 CE (Genko 4) by the monk Nonshin, by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Daigo, in Osue District of Mino Province (now Hanura City, Gifu Prefecture). In 1612 CE (Keicho 17), it was relocated to its current site in the castle town of Nagoya by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Together with the adjacent Osue Shopping Street, it forms the center of Nagoya's bustling commercial district. The temple treasure, the 'Osue Bunko' (Osue Library), is an Important Cultural Property housing numerous rare books, including the oldest extant manuscript of the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters), which is a National Treasure. It is considered one of Japan's three great scripture repositories.
