Founded by Prince Shotoku, it was originally named Genmatsuji. After being destroyed by fire and falling into ruin during the Onin War and the Siege of Osaka, it was rebuilt in 1686 CE (Jōkyō 3) by Zen Master Taishū and renamed Dairyuji.
