Founded in 1572 (Genki 3) by Mori Nagamasa as the ancestral temple for his father, Mori Kanenaga, the temple invited Eigan as its founding abbot. In 1600 (Keicho 5), Mori Tadayoshi relocated the temple to its current site during a transfer of his fief. Subsequently, buildings such as the main hall and the monks' quarters were developed through donations from the Mori family and related domains.
