There are two theories regarding its founding: one states it was established in 862 CE (Jogan 4) by Ennin, the Great Master Jigaku, while the other claims it was founded in 1471 CE (Bunmei 3) by the Dharma Master Shunou. Originally situated in Honno, Katsushika District, Kazusa Province, the temple buildings and main image were destroyed by fire during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Consequently, the temple was relocated to its current site in 1928.
