History
It is said to have been founded during the Enryaku period (782–806 CE). Originally called 'Kainan-gami,' it was considered a candidate site for a shrine recorded in national histories. In the first year of Kenkyu (1190 CE), the shrine buildings were constructed by Sasaki Sadatsuna. Thereafter, despite repeated damage from floods and fires, the shrine was relocated and rebuilt at its current location. During the Tensho period (1573–1592 CE), repairs were carried out using surplus materials from the construction of Otsu Castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, after which it became revered as the guardian deity of the castle town.
