The head shrine was originally located in Inushima in ancient times. It was rebuilt in 1469 CE (Bunmei 1), and the shrine structure was constructed in 1711 CE (Shōtoku 1) by order of Lord Ikeda. After repeated rebuilds and renovations in 1738 CE (Genbun 3), 1747 CE (Enkyō 4), 1767 CE (Meiwa 4), 1776 CE (An'ei 5), and 1829 CE (Bunsei 12), the shrine was newly built and relocated to its current location in Rōtō in 1899 CE (Meiji 32).
