History
After Sugawara no Michizane was demoted and passed away, Anrakuji Tenmangu was established to pacify his spirit. As fear of his vengeful spirit reached its peak, the shrine name "Tenmangu" began to be used in conjunction with the original name around the first year of the Seiryaku era (920 CE). In the second year of the Kanwa era (925 CE), the Onisube ritual was initiated by Sugawara no Susei.
