It is traditionally said to have been founded in 598 CE by Soga no Maruko. The temple declined after the Muromachi period but was revived in 1645 CE during the Edo period, when it converted from the Shingon sect to the Soto Zen sect. It declined again and was relocated to its current site and revived in 1880 CE during the Meiji period.
