It is the place where Emperor Sutoku was confined. A mausoleum was built to pacify his spirit, which led to the temple being known as Tennoji (Emperor Temple). It was closed as a temple during the early Meiji era due to the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism edict, but it is now recognized as the 79th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
