Taijo Shrine originated from the Tonomichi family, the hereditary heads of Onmyodo who served the Imperial Court since the mid-to-late Heian period as descendants of Abe no Seimei, a renowned Onmyoji (master of Yin-Yang divination). Although Onmyodo was banned during the modernization drive of the Meiji Restoration, the Tonomichi Shinto Domo-kai (Association of Tonomichi Shinto Practitioners) was established in 1942 (Showa 17). After World War II, the family's private shrine was relocated to Makuhari-cho, Hanamigawa Ward, Chiba City. In the Reiwa era, it was moved again to Nobeto, Chuo Ward, Chiba City, where it was revived with newly built shrine structures.
