During the medieval period, it was revered as a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) spiritual site with Yakushi Nyorai as its honji (Buddhist counterpart). In the early modern period, the Satake clan donated shrine lands. The current outer shrine was established by the 8th-generation Asahiyama Satake Yoshitoshi.
