In 1773 CE (An'ei 2), Kamei Masamune of the Tsuwano Domain received a branch enshrinement from Fushimi Inari Taisha and established the shrine on the peak of Taikudani, which corresponds to the kimon (evil direction) of Tsuwano Castle. In 1867 CE (Kei'ō 3), Kumano Gongen Shrine was relocated here, and the shrine was renamed Kumano Shrine. In 1927 CE (Shōwa 2), it was renamed Inari Shrine. It is said that the name was written as "Inari" (meaning "rice harvest") to express the wish for prayers to be granted.
