A quasi-special head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Kita Ward, Osaka City. Its principal image is Senju Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara). It is also the second temple on the New Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage route.
History
The temple's origins are said to date back to 821 CE (Kōnin 12), when Kūkai established a thatched hut enshrining statues of Jizō Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) and Bishamonten (Vaiśravaṇa). The following year, a statue of Senju Kannon bestowed by Emperor Saga was installed as the principal image. In 843 CE (Shōwa 10), Genyū expanded the temple grounds and changed the mountain name to Kakubozan and the temple name to Tairo-ji. Although the temple was completely destroyed by fire during the Summer Campaign of Osaka and the Great Osaka Air Raid, the main hall, Daishi-dō (Great Master Hall), and other buildings were reconstructed after the war.
